Double Gold for Russia at Katowice Women’s Foil World Cup

KATOWICE, Poland, Jan. 10-12—Russia’s Olympic gold medallist and triple world champion Inna Deriglazova took the individual gold medal at the Katowice, Poland Women’s Foil World Cup, with Russia also winning the team event. The competition, which took place at Katowice’s “Spodek Hall”, featured 195 international fencers and teams from 23 countries.

Deriglazova faced Italy’s Camilla Mancini in the women’s individual foil final, winning with a 15-11 score. Mancini defeated France’s Ysaora Thibus in the semifinal round, 15-8, with Deriglazova beating USA’s Lee Kiefer, 15-13. Of note, Italian Olympic and world champion Elisa Di Francisca was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Thibus, 15-10, and Italian double world champion Arianna Errigo lost in the same round to Kiefer, 15-13.

In the women’s team foil event, Russia overcame France to win the gold medal, 45-42. France narrowly eliminated Italy in the semifinals, 42-41, while Russia beat USA, 45-36. The bronze medal went to Italy over USA, 45-18.

Final rankings for individual women’s foil include Inna Deriglazova (RUS, gold), Camilla Mancini (ITA, silver), Lee Kiefer (USA, bronze), Ysaora Thibus (FRA, bronze), Elisa Di Francisca (ITA), Arianna Errigo (ITA), Martina Batini (ITA) and Song Oh Chae (KOR).

The final team rankings include Russia (gold), France (silver), Italy (bronze), USA, China, Japan, Hungary and Poland.
