HEIDENHEIM, Germany, Jan. 9-11, 2020—Hungarian world champion Gergely Siklosi won the gold medal at the 67th “Heidenheimer Pokal” Men’s Epee World Cup in Heidenheim, Germany and Hungary also took the team gold medal. The event, which took place at the “Bibris Halle”, featured 332 international fencers and teams from 35 countries.
In the final match of the men’s individual epee event, Siklosi defeated Korea’s Olympic gold medallist Sangyoung Park by a single touch to win, 15-14. Park beat Poland’s Radoslaw Zawrotniak in the semifinal round, 15-9, while Siklosi overcame Russia’s Sergey Bida, 15-8. Notably, French world champion Yannick Borel was eliminated by Park in the quarterfinals by one point, 15-14.
In the men’s epee team competition, Hungary faced France for the gold medal, winning with a 45-43 final score. France beat Italy in the semifinal, 45-24, and Hungary won against Switzerland, 45-34. Switzerland took the bronze medal against Italy, 45-36.
Final individual rankings for the Heidenheim Men’s Epee World Cup included Gergely Siklosi (HUN, gold), Sangyoung Park (KOR, silver), Sergey Bida (RUS, bronze), Radoslaw Zawrotniak (POL, bronze), Yannick Borel (FRA), Igor Reizlin (UKR), Enrico Garozzo (ITA) and Martin Capek (CZE).
The men’s team event rankings included Hungary (gold), France (silver), Switzerland (bronze), Italy, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Russia and China.
