BAMAKO, Mali, June 25, 2019—Morocco’s Houssam Elkord scored the gold medal in men’s epee at the 2019 African Fencing Championships in Bamako, Mali, and Tunisia’s Amira Ben Chaabane won gold in women’s sabre. It was the second of five days of individual and team competition with 65 fencers from across the African continent participating in the day’s events.
The final match of individual men’s epee featured Elkord facing Egypt’s Ahmed Elsaghir, winning with a 15-13 tally to take gold. In the semifinal round, Elsaghir beat teammate Mahmoud Mohsen, 15-10, while Elkord overcame Egypt’s Ahmed Elsayed, 15-9.
In individual women’s sabre, Ben Chaabane fenced Egypt’s Nour Montaser, taking the win with a 15-7 score. Montaser won against teammate Nada Hafez in the semifinal, 15-11, and Ben Chaabane narrowly defeated Egypt’s Lina Mohamed, 15-14.
Final ranking for individual men’s epee at the African Fencing Championships included Houssam Elkord (MAR, gold), Ahmed Elsaghir (EGY, silver), Ahmed Elsayed (EGY, bronze), Mahmoud Mohsen (EGY, bronze), Mohamed Elsayed (EGY), Satya Gunput (MRI), Omar Nahi (MAR) and Bourama Keba Sagnan (SEN).
For individual women’s sabre, final rankings included Amira Ben Chaabane (TUN, gold), Nour Montaser (EGY, silver), Nada Hafez (EGY, bronze), Lina Mohamed (EGY, bronze), Azza Besbes (TUN), Yasmine Daghfous (TUN), Kaouther Mohamed Belkebir (ALG) and Zohra Nora Kehli (ALG).
