On the fifth day of the competition and the first day of Junior matches, we had the chance to enjoy very high level fencing in men's epee and women's foil.
In the men’s epee final Hippolyte Bouillot (FRA) won the gold medal match in extra time against Zsombor Banyai (HUN), 15-13. It was a surprise to some to see the French world number 40 beat the Hungarian world number two but his form was excellent all day. Yulen Pereira (ESP) and Yangdong Xue (CHN) were the bronze medalists.
A classic women’s foil final concluded the proceedings on day five of the Championships. Last year’s silver medalist, Eleanor Harvey (CAN) reached the final and faced Sara Taffel (USA). A superb performance from Taffel saw her raise the world championships crown with a 15-12 victory. Leonie Ebert (GER) and Yiting Fu (CHN) won the bronze medals.
