TORUN, Poland, April 8, 2019—Junior men’s and women’s sabre teams from Italy and Hungary took gold medals on the third of nine days of fencing competition at the 2019 Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships in Torun, Poland. There were 31 men’s and 25 women’s international sabre teams participating.
In the junior men’s team event, Italy faced Russia in the final round, winning with a 45-39 score. The Russian team beat USA in the semi-final round, 45-42, and Italy defeated France, 45-43. The USA team scored a bronze-medal victory against France, 45-40.
In junior women’s team sabre, Hungary eliminated Germany in the final round to win with a 45-43 score. Germany overcame Italy in the semi-finals, 45-43, and Hungary narrowly beat USA by a single touch, 45-44. Italy took the bronze medal, 45-34.
Final ranking in junior men’s team sabre included Italy (gold), Russia (silver), USA (bronze), France, Spain, Great Britain, Germany and Romania. Junior women’s team sabre ranking included Hungary (gold), Germany (silver), Italy (bronze), USA, Korea, France, Bulgaria and Russia.
