HAVANA, Cuba, June 20, 2018—USA men’s foil and women’s sabre fencers took double gold on the final evening of the Pan American Zonal Fencing Championships in Havana, Cuba, after six days of individual and team competition. The USA won each of the six team events at the Championships, and five of the individual gold medals. Twenty-six teams from throughout the Americas participated in the final day’s events, hosted at Havana’s Coliseum of the Sports City.
In men’s team sabre, the USA defeated Canada in the final, 45-30. Canada beat Venezuela in the semi-final round, 45-39, and the USA overcame Argentina, 45-19. The bronze medal went to Argentina over Venezuela, 45-42.
The team women’s foil event final also featured USA against Canada, resulting in a 45-38 win for the U.S. fencers. Canada won against Argentina in the semi-final round, 45-16, while the USA defeated Brazil, 45-21. Brazil took the bronze medal over Argentina, 45-27.
The overall top-eight ranking for team men’s sabre includes USA (gold), Canada (silver), Argentina (bronze), Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, Brazil and Puerto Rico.
In team women’s foil, the top-eight ranking includes USA (gold), Canada (silver), Brazil (bronze), Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia and Chile.
