BANGKOK, Thailand, June 20, 2018—The Korean men’s foil and Chinese women’s sabre teams took gold medals in Bangkok on the first day of team competition at the Asia-Oceania Fencing Championships. In all, six days of fencing featuring 12 individual and team events are taking place on the Rangsit Campus of Bangkok’s Thammasat University.
Korea faced Hong Kong in the final match of men’s team foil, winning with a 45-39 score. In the semi-final round, Hong Kong defeated Japan, 45-40, while Korea overcame Australia, 45-36. In the bronze medal match, Japan scored victory over Australia, 45-31.
In women’s team sabre, China earned first place against Korea with a score of 45-42. In the semi-final round, Korea beat Hong Kong, 45-30, while China scored victory over Kazakhstan, 45-28. The bronze medal went to Kazakhstan over Hong Kong, 45-42.
The overall top-eight rankings for men’s team foil at the Bangkok Asia-Oceania Zonal Fencing Championships included Korea (gold), Hong Kong (silver), Japan (bronze), Australia, China, Singapore, Chinese Taipei and Thailand.
The top-eight rankings for women’s team sabre included China (gold), Korea (silver), Kazakhstan (bronze), Hong Kong, Japan, Iran, Singapore and Chinese Taipei.
