TUNIS, Tunisia, June 5-9 2018—The African Zonal Fencing Championships completed five days of competition in Tunis, Tunisia, with countries and fencers competing from throughout the African continent. Some of the top fencers participating in the event will travel in July to Wuxi, China to compete in the 2018 Senior World Fencing Championships. The Championships, which included six individual and six team events for men and women in epee, foil and sabre took place at the Tunis El Menzah Sports Palace.
The results are as follow:
Epee. Morocco’s Houssam Elkord defeated Egypt’s Ahmad Elsokkary, 15-11 in the final match of the men’s individual epee event, while Aya Medany of Egypt beat her teammate, Nardin Ehab, in the women’s final, 15-13.
In team competition, Egypt took a double gold in epee. The men won against Senegal, 45-27, and Algeria took the bronze medal over Libya, 45-37. The Egyptian women overcame Tunisia in the final, 45-39, with Algeria taking the bronze medal over South Africa, 45-43.
The top-eight individual men’s epee competitors included Houssam Elkord (MAR, gold), Ahmad Elsokkary (EGY, silver), Ahmed Elsayed (EGY, bronze), Alexandre Bouzaid (SEN, bronze), Mahmoud Mohsen (EGY), Abdelrahman Adel (EGY), Keletigui Julien Diabate (MLI), and Wajdi Zayer (TUN). The top-eight women included Aya Medany (EGY, gold), Nardin Ehab (EGY, silver), Ines Boubakri (TUN, bronze), Gbahi Gwladys Sakoa (CIV, bronze), Ayah Mahdy (EGY), Salwa Gaber (EGY), Maya Mansouri (TUN), and Nesrine Ghrib (TUN).
The top countries in the men’s team epee competition included Egypt (gold), Senegal (silver), Algeria (bronze), Libya, Tunisia, and Ivory Coast. In women’s team epee, the top countries included Egypt (gold), Tunisia (silver), Algeria (bronze), South Africa, and Senegal.
Foil. In the men’s individual foil event, Olympic silver medallist from Egypt Alaaeldin Abouelkassem scored gold against Tunisia’s Mohamed Ayoub Ferjani, 15-4. For the women, Tunisia’s Olympic bronze medallist Ines Boubakri (who also competed in the epee event) was victorious in the final round with Egypt’s Yara Elsharkawy, 15-5.
In the team foil events, Egypt won the men’s gold medal by beating Tunisia, 45-37, with Algeria taking bronze over Ivory Coast, 45-22. In the women’s competition, Tunisia beat Algeria in the final, 45-28, with Egypt taking the bronze medal.
The top-eight men’s individual foil fencers included Alaaeldin Abouelkassem (EGY, gold), Mohamed Ayoub Ferjani (TUN, silver), Hamid Sintes (ALG, bronze), Mohamed Essam (EGY, bronze), Mohamed Aziz Metoui (TUN), Mohamed Samandi (TUN), Mohamed Hamza (EGY), and Salim Heroui (ALG). The top-eight women included Ines Boubakri (TUN, gold), Yara Elsharkawy (EGY, silver), Noura Mohamed (EGY, bronze), Noha Hany (EGY, bronze), Meriem Mebarki (ALG), Haifa Jabri (TUN), Fatma Sethom (TUN), and Sonia Zeboudj (ALG).
The top countries in men’s team foil included Egypt (gold), Tunisia (silver), Algeria (bronze), and Ivory Coast. For the women, the team rankings included Tunisia (gold), Algeria (silver), and Egypt (bronze).
Sabre. In the individual sabre competition, Tunisia took both gold medals. Fares Ferjani (TUN) took out Egypt’s Mohamed Amer in the final men’s match, 15-13, while the gold in the women’s event went to Azza Besbes (TUN) against Egypt’s Nada Hafez, 15-7.
For the team sabre events, Egypt won the final against Tunisia, 45-39 in the men’s competition, with Algeria taking bronze against Senegal, 45-37. Tunisia earned gold in the final of the women’s team event, beating Egypt, 45-31. In the bronze medal match, the Algerian women’s team scored a narrow win over Senegal, 45-43.
The top-eight individual men’s sabre finalists included Fares Ferjani (TUN, gold), Mohamed Amer (EGY, silver), Mohab Samer (EGY, bronze), Hichem Smandi (TUN, bronze), Ahmed AMR (EGY), Ahmed Ferjani (TUN), Ibrahima Konte (SEN), and Mostafa Ayman (EGY). The women’s top-eight included Azza Besbes (TUN, gold), Nada Hafez (EGY, silver), Abik Boungab (ALG, bronze), Lina Mohamed (EGY, bronze), Amira Ben Chaabane (TUN), Blessing Olaode (NGR), Nour Montaser (EGY), and Yosra Ghrairi (TUN).
The top countries in the men’s team sabre events included Egypt (gold), Tunisia (silver), Algeria (bronze), Senegal, and Mali. For the women, top countries included Tunisia (gold), Egypt (silver), Algeria (bronze), and Senegal.
