KATHMANDU, Nepal, May, 2018—The Nepal Fencing Association has completed hosting an Olympic Solidarity (OS) Technical Course for Coaches in Sabre Fencing, held in Kathmandu from May 17-22. The course was aided by Olympic Solidarity, the Nepal Olympic Committee and the FIE.
The primary objectives of the course were to generate the technical manpower necessary to effectively promote and develop fencing in Nepal. Mr. Lama Tendi Sherpa, Secretary General of the Nepal Olympic Committee, inaugurated the course opening ceremony, conveying his best wishes for its success. During the ceremony, Mr. Sujan Lal Shrestha, Secretary General of the Nepal Fencing Association, welcomed the participants and FIE specialists, emphasizing that fencing is one of the oldest Olympic sports, yet still has a long way to go to be promoted in Nepal. He added that without technical manpower, the development of any sport is nearly impossible and, therefore, the OS Technical Course serves as a milestone in fencing’s development in Nepal.
Mr. Sunil Kumar Shrestha, President of the Nepal Fencing Association, thanked the FIE, Olympic Solidarity and the Nepal Olympic Committee for granting the Course’s organization.
The course was conducted by the FIE’s Cyril Tahon. Eighteen sabre athletes and coaches took part, enthusiastically participating to learn new skills and techniques. At its conclusion, Mr. Jeevan Ram Shrestha, President of the Nepal Olympic Committee, presented certificates to the Course participants during a closing ceremony. In the same event, Mr. Janga Giri, a member of Nepal’s APF fencing club, was awarded a cash prize for his notable performance as gold medallist in the first, second, and third Nepal National Fencing Championships.
The Nepal Fencing Association believes courses such as this one are essential to the organization in order to develop and produce qualified coaches. They expressed their collective gratitude to the FIE, Olympic Solidarity and the Nepal Olympic Committee for their cooperation and support.
