Elite foil fencers from around the world will be in California, USA this Friday and Saturday, March 17-18, competing in the Absolute Fencing Gear FIE Grand Prix Long Beach. This is the foil grand prix held in the USA since 2004, and more than 300 athletes from at least 30 nations are expected to participate.
The entries for the event include Olympic and world champions such as Arianna Errigo, currently ranked first in the world in women’s foil and USA women’s champion Lee Kiefer, who is ranked second. On the men’s side, formidable competitors such as Russia’s Timur Safin, ranked second will be competing against USA’s Alexander Massialas, ranked number one in the world, and fencing in his home state. The lineup of fencing talent for this Grand Prix promises a very spirited, tough, and exciting fencing competition.
The Grand Prix will be held at the Long Beach Convention Center, where the 1984 Summer Olympic Games fencing events took place. Fencers are expected to enjoy the attractions of Southern California in their free time, including their stay on the official Grand Prix hotel, the Queen Mary. This is the first in the second-round of this 2016-2017 FIE Grand Prix series, with other Grand Prix events coming soon in Budapest, Seoul, Shanghai, Bogota, and Moscow.
