ALGIERS, Algeria —The first FIE world cup of 2017 will take place this weekend in Algiers, featuring top-ranked women’s foil fencers competing from 15 countries around the globe. Hosted by the Algerian Fencing Federation, the event will feature both team and individual fencing events taking place at the Salle Omnisports Hacène Harcha sports arena. The event begins Friday, January 13 with eliminations, and finals will take place on Saturday, January 14 (individual) and Sunday, January 15 (team).
Some of fencing’s World Championship and Olympic champions will be competing, notably including Italy’s Arianna Errigo (ranked first in the world) and Russia’s Inna Deriglazova (ranked third). More than 100 fencers are scheduled to compete.
