LAUSANNE (October 11) – The 2016 Veterans World Championships began in the Baltic Sea city of Stralsund, Germany, on Tuesday with competitions in the men’s foil and women’s epee.
The six-day event is open to fencers over 50 with an FIE license, with medal sets awarded in three age categories: 50-59; 60-69; and 70-plus.
“Fencing veterans play an important role in the development of our sport,” said FIE President Alisher Usmanov in a message posted on the competition website.
“The World Championship is a wonderful chance for the founders of the modern fencing school to demonstrate their unique mastery and winning traditions and pass them on to the new generation,” he added.
All three weapons of sabre, foil and epee will be featured during the competition.
