Last Sunday on the finals for the Absolute Fencing Gear® New York Grand Prix we enjoyed dynamic sabre matches. On the podium for the men’s sabre Junghwan Kim (KOR) won the gold medal against Aldo Montano (ITA) 15-10. The bronze medal went to the two semifinalists Diego Occhiuzzi (ITA) and Aron Szilagyi (HUN). Aron lost on the semifinal against Kim 8-15 and Diego defeated by Aldo 13-15.
On women’s sabre the number one and World Champion Olga Kharlan (UKR) won the gold on the final against Sofya Velikaya (RUS) 15-12. Mariel Zagunis (USA) lost on the semifinal against Sofya 13-15 and she shared the 3rd position on the podium with Maria Belen Perez Maurice (ARG) who lost 6-15 from the gold medalist Olga on the semifinal.
The man and woman who were crowned champions of the Absolute Fencing Gear® New York Grand Prix on Sunday also took home the Korfanty Cup – an award sponsored by The Mariel Zagunis women’s sabre Fund in honor ofEd Korfanty– the coach of two-time Olympic ChampionMariel Zagunisand the reigning World Champion U.S. women’s sabre team.
“Ed is one of the best sabre coaches in the world and every day I am so thankful to have the opportunity to work with him and learn from him,” Zagunis said.
