RIO DE JANEIRO (April 26) – Russia defeated Italy to claim the gold medal in women’s foil at the team World Championships in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, denying fencing legend Valentina Vezzali a 17th world title on her final appearance in the sport.
Having failed to qualify for the Olympics, Vezzali, arguably history’s greatest fencer,
announced the world championships – which double as the Olympic test event -
would be her last competition.
But the Russians, anchored by world No. 2 Inna Deriglazova, spoiled the party, taking
an early lead they never relinquished to win 45-39 at the Carioca Arena 3.
