In women’s individual sabre Sofya Velikaya is now the European and world champion in the individual sabre. Velikaya has now won a total of four medals. In men’s individual sabre Alexey Yakimenko (RUS) became world champion for the first time after two third places (Leipzig 2005 and Kazan 2014).
Rossella Fiamingo (ITA) won women's individual épée to become the first woman to win back-to-back world titles in this event since Laura Flessel-Colovic (FRA) in 1998-1999. Geza Imre (HUN) won gold in the men's individual épée to claim his 10thworld championship medal in total, and his first in an individual event. Imre had won his nine previous medals in men's team épée. At the age of 40 years, Imre is the oldest winner of the men's individual épée event in world championship history.
Inna Deriglazova (RUS) won the women's individual foil in front of a home crowd.
Deriglazova defeated compatriot Aida Shanaeva (RUS) in the final. Deriglazova became the fifth woman to win this event at World Championships in front of a home crowd. Yuki Ota (JPN) won the men's individual foil. It was Japan's first ever fencing gold at world championships or Olympic Games. Ota defeated Alexander Massialas (USA) in the gold medal match.
Teams
Russia beat Ukraine 45-41 in the women's team sabre final to claim a record seventh world championship gold medal in this event. Russia has won most total medals in the women's team sabre. Sofya Velikaya (RUS) won a record fifth gold medal in women's team sabre. Velikaya previously won the gold medal in this event in 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Italy beat Russia 45-36 to claim their sixth gold medal in men's team sabre and their first since 1995. Italy had previously also won this event in 1938, 1947, 1949 and 1950.
In women’s team épée, China beat Romania 45-36 to claim their second world championship gold medal in women's team épée. China became the third country to win the gold medal at the world championships as reigning Olympic champions. Ukraine beat Korea 34-24 to claim their first gold medal in men's team épée. Ukraine completed their medal set in men's team épée as they had previously claimed the silver medal in 2013 and the bronze medal in 2005 and 2006.
Italy won the men and women’s team foil, the final event of the competition. It brought Italy's total number of gold medals to four in Moscow. The foil medalists had the honor of being presented their awards by Thomas Bach, IOC President and Olympian in foil, along with the FIE President Alisher Usmanov. This was the final awards ceremony of the Fencing World Championships 2015. Italy was also victorious in the women's team foil, the men's team sabre and the women's individual épée. Italy thereby matched Russia's gold medal total. By virtue of having won more silver medals, Russia, the host nation tops the medal table in Moscow.
