It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing on June 6, 2015 of Sergey Sharikov, one of the world’s best sabre fencers.
Born on 18 June 1974 in Moscow, he was a world, Olympic, European and Universiades champion.
Sergey Sharikov graduated from the Russian State University of Physical education and Diplomatic Academy. He participated for MGFSO and Dynamo (Moscow). His first coach was A. Filatov. Then he trained with V. Puchkov.
He was honoured Master of sport.

He was Olympic champion by team in the Olympic Games in Atlanta (1996) and in Sydney (2000). Silver medallist in individual in the Olympic Games in Atlanta (1996) and bronze medallist by team in the Olympic Games in Athens (2004).
He was World champion by team in 2001, 2002, 2003. Silver medallist at the World championships in 1995 and 1997 in team events. Bronze medallist at the 1998 World Championships in individual and team events.
He was European Champion in individual in 2000 and in team events in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. Silver medallist in the 2002 European championships in individual. Bronze medallist in the 2004 European championships in individual and by team in the 1998 European championships.
He was gold medallist in the 2001 Universiade in individual and by team in 1995 and 2001. Bronze medallist in the 1997 and 1999 Universiades in individual and by team in 1999.
He winned the Russian championships in 1997, 2003 and 2004.
From 2008, he worked as the head of the fencing Russian national junior team.
