CAIRO, Egypt, April 5, 2021—On the third day of the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships, gold medals went to Egypt and Korea for men’s and women’s junior team sabre. In total, 20 men’s and 19 women’s international teams competed in the day’s events.
In junior men’s team sabre, Egypt was victorious against Russia for the gold medal, 45-38. Russia defeated France in the semifinal round, 45-42, and Egypt beat USA, 45-31. The bronze medal went to France over USA, 45-41.
“I feel so great I can’t believe it and I don’t understand how I’m standing here right now”, said Zeyad Nofal, Egyptian junior men’s team sabre fencer. “We are really grateful. It is a very, very beautiful feeling, and when I see the people very happy it is very emotional.”
In junior women’s team sabre, Korea won gold against USA in the final match, 45-31. USA beat Romania in the semifinal, 45-42, while Korea won against Türkiye, 45-39. The bronze medal went to Romania over Türkiye, 45-40.
“It is a very good experience for me and I’m really grateful to our team and all our people”, said Jumee Park, Korean junior women’s team sabre fencer. “We had really good energy and power, and it was a great experience for all of us on the team.”
Final rankings for junior men’s team sabre included Egypt (gold), Russia (silver), France (bronze), USA, Korea, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Poland.
Final rankings for junior women’s team sabre included Korea (gold), USA (silver), Romania (bronze), Türkiye, Bulgaria, France, Russia and Ukraine.
In all, 18 individual and team fencing events in three weapons are taking place over nine days at the Indoor Halls Complex of the Cairo International Stadium in Nasr City.
