CAIRO, Egypt, April 4, 2021—On the second day of the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships, gold medals in cadet individual sabre went to Romania’s Marco Sovar (men) and USA’s Magda Skarbonkiewicz (women). Today’s events featured 57 men and 49 women from around the world.
In the cadet men’s individual sabre final, Sovar won gold against Korea’s Junseong Park, 15-13. Junseong beat Russia’s Arseniy Shelekhov in the semifinal round, 15-14, while Sovar defeated USA’s Colby Harley, 15-10.
“I feel great, I worked hard for this and I feel like I deserved it”, said Sovar. “But I didn’t fence at my highest level in the pools, and then I focused on myself and not what was around me.”
In the cadet women’s individual sabre final, Skarbonkiewicz took the gold medal with a 15-7 win over Russia’s Yulia Salabai. In the semifinal round, Salabai beat USA’s Zoe Kim, 15-10, and Skarbonkiewicz won against Azerbaijan’s Zarifa Huseynova, 15-9.
“I can’t believe it, it’s crazy and mind-blowing”, said Skarbonkiewicz. “I’ve been training for an entire year and suddenly I go to my first competition in a year and I win.”
Final rankings for cadet men’s individual sabre included Marco Sovar (ROU, gold), Junseong Park (KOR, silver), Arseniy Shelekhov (RUS, bronze), Colby Harley (USA, bronze), Radu Nitu (ROU), Asier Olangua (ESP), Murad Akbarov (AZE) and Bexultan Abzhal (KAZ).
Final rankings for cadet women’s individual sabre included Magda Skarbonkiewicz (USA, gold), Yulia Salabai (RUS, silver), Zoe Kim (USA, bronze), Zarifa Huseynova (AZE, bronze), Yunseo Lee (KOR), Alina Pastukhova (RUS), Teodora Neagu (ROU) and Denisa Serban (ROU).
In all, 18 individual and team fencing events in three weapons are taking place over nine days at the Indoor Halls Complex of the Cairo International Stadium in Nasr City.
